Transcripts as files

Guide · Obsidian

Your meetings in Obsidian

Choose a folder in your Obsidian vault as Sæga's folder, and every meeting shows up as an ordinary note among the rest.

In Sæga

  1. Settings → Recording → Meetings → Keep every transcript as a file. Turn it on and choose a folder. The picker opens in a folder your cloud already syncs, if you have one.
  2. Projects become folders. A meeting in a project goes in the project's folder, the rest in Inbox. When a meeting changes project its file moves too, as long as you haven't edited it.
  3. Name and project while the meeting runs. Click the name in the meeting panel to type a new one, and pick the project in the menu below it.

File transcripts (audio and video files you transcribe) go in the same folder. Only want one project's meetings: Edit Project → Keep a Markdown copy of each meeting in a folder.

To Obsidian

In Sæga, choose a folder inside your vault, or choose the vault itself as the folder. Obsidian shows the fields at the top of the file as properties. You will see for example title, start, projects and speakers.

From there it is ordinary Obsidian: search the transcripts, link to them from other notes and ask an AI plugin of your own if you have one.

Tried: the files' fields are read as properties (YAML). We have not yet clicked through the Obsidian steps themselves.

What happens to your data

Sæga writes the files on your Mac and never uploads anything. Your own sync, if you sync the vault, takes them on, and from there that service's terms apply. The files are not encrypted like Sæga's own transcripts, so anyone who can open the folder can read them. The audio never goes with them.

When you delete a meeting in Sæga, it asks whether the file should go too. A file you have edited always stays.

Common questions

Does the vault have to be synced for this to work?

No. Sæga writes the files in the folder on your Mac. If you sync the vault, your own sync does the rest.

Can I edit the files in Obsidian?

Yes, but Sæga never overwrites a file you have changed. If the meeting changes in Sæga afterwards, the new version lands next to it, with (Sæga) in the name.
