Privacy Policy
This is an English translation of the Swedish privacy policy. If the two versions differ, the Swedish version applies.
Short version: Sæga transcribes audio locally on your Mac. The audio never leaves your computer, and we never receive, store or share it. Text only leaves your Mac when you use a mode that is written in the cloud, and then only the text is sent, through Sæga’s server to Anthropic. Sæga’s server doesn’t store the text, only counters of how many AI texts are used. If you buy Pro, Lemon Squeezy handles your email and the payment.
1. Who is the data controller
Sæga is run by Fredrik Carlsson, sole trader (enskild firma), Sweden. Contact: support@saega.app. This policy covers the app, the website saega.app and related services.
2. What data is processed
Audio and speech
Audio is recorded and transcribed locally on your Mac, with speech models that run on the computer: Pianissimo (Swedish), Parakeet Ultra (several languages), KB-Whisper (Swedish) and NB-Whisper (Norwegian). The speech models are downloaded from Sæga’s own storage at Google Cloud. The audio never leaves your device. The recording is saved temporarily in the app’s folder on your Mac while it is transcribed and deleted right after. If a transcription fails, the audio is kept for a short while so it can be retried, and is then deleted automatically.
Transcribed text
In Raw mode the text stays on your Mac, and so it does when Sæga cleans it up on your Mac with Apple Intelligence (macOS 26). In modes that are written in the cloud (cleanup in the cloud, translation, Email, AI Prompt, Rewrite, session summaries and custom modes) only the text is sent over an encrypted connection to Sæga’s server and on to Claude from Anthropic. Words from your dictionary go with it and, for cleanup, up to three of your dictations from the last ten minutes, so that “she” and “that” are understood correctly. The audio is never sent.
Sæga’s server doesn’t store the text. Anthropic doesn’t train its models on it and deletes it within 30 days, unless it is flagged for violating Anthropic’s usage policy, in which case it can be kept longer. See Anthropic’s rules on retention and training.
A new install sends nothing until you choose such a mode yourself. With Local Mode on, no text is sent at all.
Custom modes
When you create or change a custom mode, your description, a recent dictation and the dictations you try the mode on, sometimes with words from your dictionary, are sent through Sæga’s server to Anthropic. This applies even if you use your own Anthropic key. When you then use the mode, the text you dictated and the mode’s rules are sent the same way as other AI texts. Sæga’s server stores none of it, and Anthropic handles it as above.
Your own Anthropic key
If you use your own Anthropic key, and no Pro licence is activated on the Mac, AI texts go directly from your Mac to Anthropic, under your own agreement with Anthropic. We have no insight into them. The key is kept in the macOS keychain on your Mac and is never sent to Sæga’s server.
Usage counters on Sæga’s server
So that the free tier’s 40 AI texts a month and the Pro cap work, and to protect the service from abuse, Sæga’s server counts how much is used. It stores:
- a random ID for your Mac, created by the app and not linked to your name, with the number of AI texts per month and the number of custom modes you create per day
- on the free tier, your IP address with the number of requests per day, so that a single computer can’t claim the free tier many times over
- with Pro, your licence key with the number of AI texts per hour and per month, and the number of custom modes you create per day
The counters never contain what you dictated. The server runs on Google Cloud (Cloud Functions and Firestore) in Google’s data centre in Finland, within the EU. Google Cloud also keeps technical logs of the requests, with IP address, for operations and security.
Licence and updates
With Pro, the app checks the licence with Lemon Squeezy about once a day. It sends the licence key and a short ID for your Mac. Sæga’s server stores the licence’s status, the licence key and the email address from the purchase, which Lemon Squeezy sends us, so it can tell that the licence is valid. Once a day the app also asks saega.app whether there is a new version. That is an ordinary web request, and it contains nothing about how you use the app.
Personal dictionary, history and settings
Stored locally on your Mac in ~/Library/Application Support/Saega/. History and notes are encrypted. Nothing is synced to any cloud service. The data stays until you remove it, even if you uninstall the app; here is how to remove everything (in Swedish).
Voice commands and system permissions
If you say a built-in phrase on its own, Sæga carries it out instead of typing it, and the phrase is interpreted locally. Notes are encrypted on your device. Reminders go into Apple’s Reminders, where macOS asks for permission the first time. Spotify is controlled as an app on your computer through Apple Events, not through Spotify’s servers and without any link to your account; there too macOS asks first. Three phrases are exceptions: “search for …”, “ask Claude …” and “ask ChatGPT …” open an address in your web browser that contains the words you said. All three are turned off in Local Mode.
Account and payment data (Pro only)
When you buy Pro, Lemon Squeezy (Sold through Link, LLC, formerly Lemon Squeezy LLC, USA) handles your email address, payment method and billing address. We receive your email and licence key so we can deliver the product. See Lemon Squeezy’s privacy policy.
Analytics
The website saega.app uses two analytics tools for aggregate visitor statistics: Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and PostHog (EU-hosted, eu.i.posthog.com). They measure page views, country-level geography, download clicks and how visitors move between pages. PostHog may also record anonymous session replays (mouse, clicks and navigation) with input fields masked. IP addresses are anonymised. No personal profile is built: we only know how the site is used, not by whom. Both load only after your consent in the cookie banner. The app itself contains no analytics and no telemetry.
Crash reports (opt-in)
If you turn on crash reports in Settings → Privacy, technical error reports are sent to Sentry (Functional Software Inc., USA), which stores them in the EU. Your text, your audio, API keys and your IP address are never included. The default is off.
3. Legal basis (GDPR)
- Contract: delivering the Pro licence, receipt and licence key, and writing the text in the cloud modes you choose (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR)
- Legitimate interest: usage counters and the per-IP counter for the free tier and abuse protection, and technical server logs for operations and security (Art. 6(1)(f))
- Consent: web analytics (GA4 and PostHog) loads only when you accept the cookie banner; crash reporting is turned on manually by you (Art. 6(1)(a))
4. How long data is kept
- Audio: never, deleted after transcription
- Transcribed text: locally for as long as you keep it. Sæga’s server doesn’t store it. Anthropic deletes it within 30 days, longer only if it is flagged for violating Anthropic’s usage policy
- Local history and dictionary: until you delete them
- Usage counters on Sæga’s server: contain no text, apply to one month (per Mac and licence) or one day (per IP address) and are deleted on request
- Licence data on Sæga’s server: for as long as the licence exists, and deleted on request
- Technical server logs at Google Cloud: 30 days
- Lemon Squeezy data: according to their retention (typically 7 years for bookkeeping requirements)
- GA4 data: at most 14 months
- PostHog data: according to the project’s retention (EU region)
- Sentry reports: at most 90 days
5. Providers we share data with
- Google Cloud (Cloud Functions and Firestore, EU): Sæga’s server for AI texts and custom modes, usage counters, licence status and technical logs
- Anthropic: the text in cloud modes and when you create custom modes
- Lemon Squeezy: payment, licence delivery and licence checks (Pro buyers)
- Google Analytics: aggregate site statistics
- PostHog: navigation and usage statistics (EU-hosted)
- Sentry: crash reports (if turned on)
- Firebase Hosting: serves the website and answers when the app checks for new versions
- Google Cloud Storage: serves the .dmg file and the speech models
We never sell data. We never share data outside the providers listed above.
6. Transfers outside the EU/EEA
Sæga’s server and its counters are at Google Cloud in the EU, and Sentry stores crash reports in the EU. Anthropic, Sentry and Google are nonetheless based in the USA. Transfers take place under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC) and the companies’ participation in the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Lemon Squeezy is also US-based and takes part in the same framework.
7. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- Request a copy of the data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request erasure (“the right to be forgotten”)
- Request data portability
- Object to processing based on legitimate interest
- Complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (imy.se)
Send requests to support@saega.app. We reply within 30 days.
8. Security
Audio is deleted right after transcription. All network traffic is encrypted (TLS 1.2+). History and notes are encrypted on your Mac. Licence keys are checked with Lemon Squeezy before Pro is unlocked.
9. Changes
Material changes to this policy are announced through an app update or by email (if you have Pro). The “Last updated” date at the top always reflects the current version.
